Date: April 21, 2018
Time: 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM PDT
Event Description:
Join us on Saturday, April 21st for an evening of high-energy Celtic tunes with Blackthorn Band! Blackthorn’s extensive repertoire is rooted in the musical traditions of Scotland and Ireland as well as the folk music of English and French Canada. The band performs creative original compositions that reflect the influences of these traditions–from lively jigs and reels, to songs with rousing choruses and heart-wrenching airs and ballads, they bring the music to life with their luscious harmonies and complex instrumentation. With four talented musicians (three of whom share lead vocals), Blackthorn boasts a refreshing diversity of character to the group’s polished sound and mastery of a colorful variety of instruments. The results are witness in the high-caliber, entertaining performances they consistently deliver to audiences. Blackthorn Band is comprised of four terrific musicians. Rosie Carver (fiddle, vocals) is a classically trained violinist, teacher, and associate director of the Vancouver Corelli Strings. She is the founder and director of the West Coast Fiddleheads and holds fiddle workshops around the lower mainland. Michelle Carlisle (flue, piccolo, pennywhistle, fife, vocals) spent many years developing musical skills in areas including Classical, Jazz, Latin, Blues and Rock. Then along came the opportunity to “go Celtic” and she fell into the embrace of the mystical melodies, the churning rhythms and the complex harmonies. Michael Viens (guitar, harmonica, bodhran, vocals) is a regular fixture on the Vancouver Celtic scene. Michael co-hosts weekly traditional music sessions, teaches bodhran and guitar, and is a host of “In the Claddagh Ring” Friday evenings on Vancouver Co-op Radio CFRO 100.5FM. Tim Renaud (bass, bodhran, octave-mandolin, vocals) became more interested in Celtic music as he grew up and started writing music in a more traditional style. Today, Tim has now grown in his musical role to produce and engineer albums such as the latest release by Blackthorn, “Sweet Forget Me Not.” Members of the Celtic Arts Foundation save 20% on their tickets, so be sure to join or renew before making your purchase in order to save on this concert and many others!
